Acoustic Sound Transmission Classes – STC & OITC:

STC:

The most used and well known rating used throughout North America for determining losses in airborne sound transmission is known as the “STC” rating, also known as the “sound transmission class.” Calculated in accordance with the ASTM E413, the STC rating covers a majority of common noises that are heard everyday such as: speech, music, television, barking animals, and other similar annoyances which range in the 125 Hz to 4,000 Hz frequency range. When examining an STC rating, it is important to remember that a higher number directly corresponds to better noise isolation. Here are some examples of common STC ratings:

  • A 2×4 wall with a single layer of drywall on each side has an STC rating of 35-38
  • A 2×4 wall with a single layer of drywall on each side and steel studs has an STC rating of 42-45
  • A wood constructed ceiling or floor has a STC rating of 40-43
  • A 6 inch concrete sub-floor has an STC rating of 52-55

OITC:

Focused on examining low frequency performance, the “OITC” or “outside inside transmission class” is the second most well known rating throughout North America. This particular rating is used to measure the exterior noise emitted by specific products and with that data, develop a performance log on the product as well as a products value when used in low to mid range frequency areas. A low frequency area most commonly contains frequencies ranging from 30,000 Hz to 300,000 Hz; much like in a home theater or recording studio. Furthermore, the OTIC rating represents transmission loss results ranging from 80 Hz to 4,000 Hz and therefore articulates results in decimals in contrast to the point system used in an STC rating.
